Headphones or Earphones are a pair of small loudspeakers, or to a lesser extent a lone speaker, which is kept close to the ears and can be connected to a source like a Radio, Audio Amplifier, etc. With reference to telecommunication, the term Headset is a combination of a headphone and a microphone used for double sided communication, such as a telephone. These days head phones are commonly used to play musical instruments, MP3s, DVD’s, etc.

They are transducers which receive electrical signals from a media player or receiver. The speakers of the headphone convert such signals to sound waves which inturn is   heard by us. Therefore this description provides us with an idea about how telephones and radio’s function and it are a known fact that headphones preceded both these functions.

There are mainly four types of headphones, namely Circumaural Headphones, Supra- Aural Headphones, Earphones and Canalphones. These headphones vary in looks,design and are available in various sizes. These days, a large number of people are more concerned about the looks and designs of the Headphones as compared to the quality of sound it provides and the various technological features associated with it. This is not how it should be. A good long lasting listening experience is more important as compared to good looks and a not so good listening experience.

However, as per studies conducted it has been known that using headphones at a high volume level can lead to temporary or permanent hearing loss. Companies are launching safer products to face this crisis. It is believed that closed-air headphones are safer as compred to open air headphones, which allow outside interference. This is because people do not have to turn up the volume as the sound quality is already good.
